An update on the activities of our former No. 1 Good Guys:

Darrell Green - Good Guy (1999)

Darrell Green (1999). In the past year Green has started two more Youth Life Learning Centers -- in Greenville, N.C., and Nashville, Tenn. -- in addition to the original one in Washington, D.C. He also began a National Training Institute to train others to start their own learning centers.

David Robinson (1999). Last September, Robinson opened privately funded Carver Academy in San Antonio to 60 pre-kindergarten through second-grade students. The initial funding for the academy came from his $5 million donation.

Derrick Brooks (2000). After five summers of funding and escorting Tampa boys and girls to such places as South Africa and the western United States, Brooks took a year off.

Dikembe Mutombo (2001). The groundbreaking for his hospital in the Congo, his native country, was last September. Construction is in the site clearing/utility preparation stage. Medical equipment purchases also are being developed. The project will take 33 months to complete.

WHO ARE THE GOOD GUYS?
This is the fourth year The Sporting News has selected the most impressive Good Guys in pro sports -- those athletes in the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and NASCAR who have the biggest hears, who give back the most to the community, who are the most willing to serve the needy and unfortunate.

Candidates are nominated by their individual teams and leagues. Management and former players are not considered; TSN selects the winners.
