KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Spanish teammates Alejandro Canizares and Gonzalo Fdez.-Castano combined to win three matches Friday and lead the European team to a 14-10 victory over the United States in the Palmer Cup.

Canizares, an Arizona State freshman who won the NCAA individual championship last season, joined Castano to open the foursome matches with a 3-and-1 victory over Bill Haas and Chris Nallen. The Spaniards then won afternoon singles matches, Canizares over Brandt Snedeker and Castano again over Haas.

Canizares is the son of Champions Tour player Jose Maria Canizares.

In all, the European team of collegiate golfers won six of 12 matches and halved two to clinch the cup at Cassique at The Kiawah Island Club.

Europe entered Friday with a 7-5 lead.

Despite the European win, American teams hold a 4-2-1 edge in Palmer Cup play. The Ryder Cup-style competition for college golfers will be held next year at Ballybunion Golf Club in Ireland.
