CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- Davis Love III insisted all is well at home.
On Wednesday, Love broached the subject of marital harmony before a group of stunned reporters.
"Contrary to popular rumor," he said, "I'm not getting divorced, and we are not unhappy, and we're doing very, very well at home."
Referring to the death of his wife's brother-in-law by suicide this summer, Love said, "The tragedy in my family has spurred some rumors. I don't know if they started on tour or they started at home.
"There's another top player that is having the same problem. He's playing well, and for some reason when we play well, people start things that aren't true. I guess from jealousy -- or in my situation, there's a lot going on this summer."
Love revisited the issue Sunday, making emotional remarks at the end of the CBS telecast and saying he was dedicating his victory to his wife, Robin.
In a post-tournament press conference, he called the rumors "crazy," "unfounded" and "vicious."
"Robin has had to pick up the pieces for her family and for our business because my brother-in-law ran our family office," Love said. "She's been very patient and supportive.
"Some really mean things were said about her that are completely untrue. It's just not fair because she's a good person. As friends of mine said, we don't give Robin enough credit, and this is before the rumors started.
"I wanted her to be here, but we decided it was best for her to put the kids in school (Monday) morning and have life go on as normal. As I told her last night on the phone, I thought about it all day (Saturday) and I missed that putt on the last hole because I was thinking about what I was going to say to (CBS commentator) Peter Kostis when I walked off the green."
Chasing the Cup: Charles Howell III finished ninth and cracked the top 10 of the U.S. rankings for the Presidents Cup team.
Howell, who had stood 11th, displaced No. 10 Bob Estes, who did not play. Fred Funk, who missed the cut, remained 12th.
Next week's PGA championship is the final tournament to determine the team. Ten players will qualify, and captain Jack Nicklaus will have two captain's choices.
"Oh, I definitely want to make the team," Howell said. "That was my No. 1 goal starting this year, and I'm close to it."
The United States will meet an International team Nov. 17-23 in South Africa.
Shark attack: Greg Norman withdrew because of a back injury after playing one hole Sunday.
Norman wrenched his back on the practice tee and tried to play, but he walked off.
He began the day with 18 points, tied for 11th place, but 23 points behind leader Davis Love III.
Norman has said he will play on the International squad at the Presidents Cup if invited. It was unclear how the injury would affect his availability.
Chip shots: Ernie Els was the lone player Sunday to post a double-digit score. Els had 13 points, jumping him from 13 points to 26. ... Englishman Paul Casey, who made his 16th career start on the PGA Tour, posted his first top-10 finish. He tied for 10th with 23 points. ... The International lived up to its name: 17 of the 39 players Sunday were foreigners.
