BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Two people were killed and 17 injured Sunday when fans from rival soccer clubs clashed at a highway toll booth, police said.

One man was shot to death and the other was stabbed, according to police.

About 100 fans were detained after the violent clash near the town of Zarate, 75 miles north of Buenos Aires.

Police said fans of River Plate and supporters of Newell's Old Boys started fighting when they crossed paths at the toll booth.

The River Plate fans were on their way to a league match against Rosario Central while the Newell's fans were headed to a match against Boca Juniors. River beat Rosario Central 2-0 while Newell's lost to Boca by the same score.

Soccer violence in Argentina has taken more than 70 lives since 1950, according to police figures.
