United break through Rapids' defense

WASHINGTON -- Eliseo Quintanilla scored the first goal against the Colorado Rapids in more than four games, giving D.C. United a 1-0 victory Wednesday night.

While Colorado hadn't allowed a goal in 390 minutes, the Rapids also had not been shutout since a scoreless draw June 11 with the United (7-6-6), who have won three straight matches.

The Rapids (7-9-3) came into Wednesday's game having won five straight, equaling the longest winning streak in the league this season. But they found themselves behind in the 31st minute when Quintanilla lined a low, left-footed shot into the far corner on a cross through the box from Marco Etcheverry. It was the 100th assist of Etcheverry's MLS career.

John Spencer wasn't nearly as fortunate for Colorado. His shot off the far post in the 13th minute prevented the Rapids from taking a 1-0 lead, and his uncontested shot from 10 yards rattled off the crossbar in the 52nd.
