Portsmouth take over 1st place in Premier League

LONDON -- Newly promoted Portsmouth moved into first place in England's Premier League, beating visiting Bolton 4-0 on Tuesday night as Teddy Sheringham scored three goals.

Portsmouth (2-0-1), the first division champion last season, moved ahead of Manchester City (2-0-1) on goal difference. Arsenal, defending champion Manchester United and Chelsea (all 2-0) are one point back.

In other games Tuesday, Everton gained a 2-2 tie at Charlton on a 72nd-minute goal by Wayne Rooney, Southampton gained a scoreless tie at Leeds and Middlesbrough played a scoreless tie at Leicester.
