NEEDHAM, Mass. -- Maren Meinert, the WUSA's most valuable player this season, changed her plans and will play for Germany in the upcoming Women's World Cup.

The Boston Breakers forward originally said she would not play in the tournament, which begins Sept. 20. But Meinert said Friday she will begin training with the German team on Monday in Frankfurt.

Germany plays its first match in Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 20 against Canada.

Meinert finished the WUSA season with a rare triple crown. She won the league MVP and the All-Star MVP awards, and was selected as a first-team All-WUSA player. Meinert was the sixth-leading scorer in the league with nine goals and 10 assists for 28 points.
