NEW YORK -- Ivo Karlovic, who upset defending champion Lleyton Hewitt in the first round at Wimbledon in June, beat Alun Jones 6-4, 6-4 Tuesday in the opening round of the GHI Bronx Tennis Classic.

The 6-10 Karlovic, ranked No. 121 in the world, won last week's USTA Challenger event in Binghamton.

"I had a great match today and I'm looking ahead to going into qualifying rounds at the U.S. Open," he said, referring to the Grand Slam tournament that gets under way later this month.

In a women's first-round match Tuesday, 16-year-old wild card Jamea Jackson, ranked 599th in the world, beat eighth-seeded Renata Voracova 6-2, 6-4. Voracova was ranked No. 117.

Other first-round winners were: seventh-seeded Lindsay Lee-Waters, who beat Tatiana Poutcheck 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-2 and Bethanie Mattek, who eliminated Julien Variet 7-5, 6-2.
