TORONTO -- Amelie Mauresmo's bid for a second straight Rogers AT&T Cup title ended Friday night when she was ousted from the quarterfinals by Elena Dementieva.
"I was very motivated today, especially because the last time she beat me 6-0, 6-0," Dementieva said.
This time, ninth-seeded Dementieva took No. 3 Mauresmo 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Also advancing to the semifinals were No. 2 Justin Henin-Hardenne and unseeded players Paola Suarez and Lina Krasnoroutskaya.
Henin-Hardenne faces Dementieva. Krasnoroutskaya, who ousted world No. 1 Kim Clijsters earlier in the tournament, meets Suarez.
The 10,000-seat center court at the National Tennis Centre was three-quarters full for the evening match between Mauresmo and Dementieva despite the absence of public transit and advisories to avoid non-essential travel following the previous day's massive power blackout.
Public scoreboards that weren't functioning the day before at the tournament were up and running Friday.
Mauresmo has battled knee and rib injuries this season and with the exception of Fed Cup hadn't played a tournament since June. The inactivity was evident in several sprayed backhands and her inability to handle Dementieva's soft second serve, which Mauresmo often blew out the back of the court.
Mauresmo, who defeated Jennifer Capriati to win last year in Montreal, took a medical timeout in the second set and yelled at the line judge for what she thought was a long ball by Dementieva in the third set.
Henin-Hardenne defeated Elena Bovina 6-2, 6-4, but the French Open champ said she felt the effects of poor sleep and said it was partly because of the bizarre circumstances of the blackout.
"I was feeling a little bit nervous because it was a strange evening, so it was pretty bad," she said. "No power at the hotel, no water, nothing. So it was pretty tough."
With Clijsters ousted from the tournament, Henin-Hardenne is the favorite to win Sunday, and a victory here is important to her, even with the U.S. Open looming in less than two weeks.
"I'm not these kind of players who just try to stay focused on Grand Slams," she said.
Suarez upset 10th-seeded Vera Zvonareva 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, and Krasnoroutskaya ousted Katarina Srebotnik 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
