NEW YORK -- Marat Safin, the 2000 champion, pulled out of the U.S. Open on Thursday with a wrist injury.

Safin also withdrew from the French Open and Wimbledon this year. He's played just one match since April -- and he didn't finish it, quitting during the first set at Los Angeles last month.

The Russian was seeded 26th for the U.S. Open.

Guillermo Canas also pulled out of the Open, which starts Monday, saying he hasn't fully recovered from wrist surgery.

Safin and Canas will be replaced in the field by "lucky losers" -- the highest-ranked players to lose in the final round of qualifying.

Both of the injured players originally were put in French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero's quarter of the draw, with Canas his original first-round opponent.

Juan Ignacio Chela now will be seeded 33rd and move into Safin's spot in the draw.

If another seeded player withdraws, Tim Henman would be seeded 34th and be moved out of a first-round match against No. 4 Andy Roddick.
