COMMACK, N.Y. -- Defending champion Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand beat Sargis Sargsian of Armenia 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the TD Waterhouse Cup.

The 24-year-old Srichaphan won his first ATP title at this event last year. He went on to finish No. 16 in the final ATP rankings.

Srichaphan has not won a tournament in 22 tries this year. He made it to the final only once, losing to Andy Roddick in straight sets at Indianapolis four weeks ago.

"Winning here last year turned my career around," Srichophan said. "Nobody expected anything of me. From here, I went on to reach the second round of the U.S. Open, my best showing there in three years."

Srichaphan will face Jeff Morrison in the quarterfinals. Morrison defeated Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-6 (7), 6-3.

Morrison has defeated Srichaphan in their only two matches.

Nicolas Kiefer of Germany beat Flavio Saretta of Brazil 6-3, 6-1. Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina defeated Olivier Rochus of Belgium 7-6 (3), 6-1.
